Edward Lifson Critiques Demolition Plans

Critic and architecture scholar Edward Lifson, who produced and hosted National Public Radio / WBEZ 91.5’s well-known “Hello Beautiful” program, has posted two entries on his on-line blog, Hello Beautiful!  Over several decades, Lifson also has contributed to numerous other radio programs, journals, and venues devoted to the field or architecture.

Going, Going, Gone:  Works by Mies and Gropius in Chicago

Tearing Down Gropius in Chicago?

Lifson now resides in Los Angeles for the Annenberg Fellowship at the University of Southern California, after having completed a Loeb fellowship at Harvard the year prior.  However, he remains deeply concerned about matters pertaining to Chicago architecture and design.

Referencing the idea of a Bauhaus District on Chicago’s South Side, Lifson comments,

“Shouldn’t Chicago think about preserving this and creating a district showing the birth of Modern Architecture? Wouldn’t that be smarter, more responsible and less wasteful than tearing this down? Did I say less wasteful?”

Please read Lifson’s entries for his unique and compelling take on preservation of Michael Reese hospital.  A short statement by the GCC’s Director, Grahm Balkany, is also posted.
